HOW TO BE HAPPY?
Many people think that I am a happy person, enjoying my life. Well, that’s true. We often talk with Cyryl about what can we change in our life to make it even better. Today’s post is all about it.
1. What is happiness?
At the beginning take a moment to think what happiness means for you. It matters because it’s hard to find happiness if you don’t know what happiness is. There are many definitions of happiness which are seemingly similar. For many people happiness is prosperity and success. For others happiness equals pleasure. In my opinion happiness is something more. I believe it is a satisfaction with a life we live. Okay, so what can we do to live our life well?
2. How to achieve happiness?
From all known disciplines of science and knowledge the art of living a good life seems to be the hardest. To achieve happiness we need both – auto reflection and hard work. It is not enough to say to yourself “don’t worry” and wait for happiness to come. At the beginning, we need to know who we are and what can we change to be a better person. We need to think about what are most important things in life. Then, we need to work on improving ourselves.
3. What is really important in life?
Reflection on what is important in our life is the first step toward happiness.
Think about what really matters and what doesn’t. Don’t focus on things which are not important. Spend more time and emotions on things that matter. Don’t worry about things that don’t matter. So you spilled a coffee on your new blouse. It is a pity, but that’s only a blouse. You dropped your phone on the sidewalk and the glass cracked. Of course, it would be better if this never happened. But it did and this is only a phone. Remember there is no point in worrying about things that don’t depend on you. What good can it bring?
4. Don’t worry about the things that don’t depend on you.
It’s no good crying over spilled milk. What’s done is done. If something unpleasant happens to you – your anger will not bring any good. Remember: happy people are never angry at the nature, weather or coincidence. It is different when something bad happens because of you did. You can’t go back in time, but you can turn a failure into success. When you hurt someone, you should try apologizing and making amends. You can’t blame yourself for something and do nothing about it. When you make a mistake, you have to fix it. You need to rebuild a broken relationship. Instead of feeling sorry for yourself, try learning from your experience. Think of what you did wrong and try not doing it ever again. Turn your mistakes to a valuable lesson not worthless failure.
5. What should I focus on in my life?
Make time to stop for a moment and look back. Don’t recall bad memories but try to notice how much you have managed to accomplish. Be grateful for what you have. And at the same time focus on here and now. Don’t let your life pass you by. Enjoy the moment. When you are walking in the forest, listen to birds singing, not some mp3s. When you eat a dinner in a fancy restaurant, enjoy your meal, don’t look at your phone. Find joy in small things – a nice cup of coffee, a book, a lovely evening with friends. Try to smile more often.
6. Remember how important other people are.
Don’t attach yourself to material things. Enjoy meeting people and time spent with them instead of owning things. Surrender yourself with people worthy to be in your life. Hang out with positive people and avoid “energy vampires”. Each of us is different, you don’t have to be the life of the party, if it doesn’t feel like you. But don’t be so serious about yourself. Don’t take criticism personally and don’t be too sensitive. Enjoy spending time with other people. Listen more, talk less. If you disagree with someone, say it, but don’t argue with everyone about everything. When you get old, it’s better to have friends around you instead of being right about everything. Remember, you don’t need to have an opinion on everything.
7. It is better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven’t done.
You only live once and you have only one chance to live your life right. So, just try your best. Wisława Szymborska wrote “Nothing can ever happen twice. […] No day copies yesterday, no two nights will teach what bliss is, in precisely the same way, with precisely the same kisses.”
Don’t live in fear of what other people might think of you. It is your life and your task to live is to the fullest. In the end most people regret only the chances they didn’t take. Try fixing bad things in your life. Make most of your life. Take a deep breath and start living your life. Now. Be happy. Today.
